These paintings, executed during the past two years, are derived primarily from classical and renaissance works seen and studied during my recent European travels. These are seminal works, selected because of what they tell us about humanity and its most basic interactions. They generally began as drawings of existing works, augmented by careful study of the living model. As is the case with the majority of my two dimensional works, these feature bright colors that are selected for expressive rather than representational reasons; I am not generally interested in local color, except as it expresses form or emotional content. Furthermore and also in keeping with my style, though these paintings are inspired by well known works, their compositions are so far removed from context, their origins are of largely academic interest. The paintings speak for themselves and allow the viewer to interpret them in ways possibly unintended by the original artist. This exhibition is organized into suites of "rooms" that are roughly chronological. The guided visit begins with the most recent works, facilitating repeat visits. This figurative series is still in its infancy with dozens of additional works in development or yet to be conceived, so return visits are de rigeur. Aside from the guided chronological visit, one may skip directly to specific works from the catalogue of all major works. |
